Juliettes

Girls who want to be members of Girl Scouting but are unable to participate in troop or group activities can register as an individual member. These individual members are known as Juliettes. The Girl Scouts of Tejas Council provides these girls with many opportunities to participate in Council-sponsored activities.

Juliettes is an alternative for all age levels and comes with no requirements other than Girl Scout membership fee of $10.00.

Although individually registered girls ages 5-17 can become Juliettes, the option is especially popular among girls ages 11-17. Tweens and teens have asked for flexibility in their Girl Scout experiences. Being a Juliette gives a menu of participation options that can be matched more closely to a girl’s time and interests. Some of today’s girls register as individuals because they were Girl Scouts as younger girls and are now looking for a new way to stay connected while not making a year-long commitment to a troop/group.

Some girls may be looking for ways of mixing and matching their special interests with Girl Scout participation - for example they take part in weekend workshops, special events, leadership projects, or vacation retreats that improve their skills and meet their needs. Some girls may live in an area where there are few or no other registered girls. Whatever the reason, Juliettes adds another dimension to Girl Scouts, which helps to assure that Girl Scouting is for every girl, everywhere!

Q. How can individually registered girls participate in Girl Scouting?

A. The Council and many Girl Scout areas implement special Juliettes-only events. Juliettes may join service unit and Council-wide events, attend day and resident camps, sell Girl Scout cookies, and participate in trips with troops or attend events with friends of their choice.

Q. Can Juliettes work on badges and try-its and earn awards?

A. Yes, Juliettes are eligible to participate in most of the opportunities available to girls in troops such as badge work. Sometimes you may just go about doing some activities a little differently. For example, Juliette Girl Scouts call upon their parents or adult relatives to act as the “troop leader” and friends can be the “troop members” for activities designed for groups.

Q. Do individually registered girls participate in community service activities?

A. Yes. Juliettes want to be advocates for good causes, and if they choose they may participate in Council-sponsored community service projects or other service projects in their area. Girl Scouting is about girls participating in activities they enjoy doing. When individually registered girls choose to work on badges and other awards, these girls will complete community service-oriented work as required.

Q. How do Juliettes find out about events?

A. Juliettes receive issues of the Council magazine, Tejas News and, the Resident Camp and Day Camp Guide in the mail. The council online calendar, as well as Going Places provides information on activities that Juliettes may participate in.

Q. How do Juliettes sign up for events?

A. You will find an Event Registration Form on the Web site. You may decide you want to participate with a bunch of your Juliette friends, a troop, or you can just grab your favorite adult and go. However you decide to do it, make sure to join the fun!

Q. Is there a special uniform or emblem for Juliettes?

A. Although uniforms are not a requirement to be a Girl Scout, many girls want to purchase one to feel like they are part of a group. Juliette Girl Scouts may choose to purchase uniform components appropriate for her Girl Scout level or select cool Girl Scout T-shirts. A special emblem for Juliettes is available for sale in our Girl Scout Shop. It can be worn where troop numbers would be placed on a sash or vest. You can shop online on the Web site or visit any of the shops at our three Service Centers.

Q. Can Juliettes sell Girl Scout Cookies?

A. Yes, a Juliette can sell cookies. Two options are listed below:

  • 1. She may sell with a troop at any level. Her sales awards are sent to the troop with the troop sales awards. Her bonus is kept with the troop bonus.
  • 2. She may sell individually. Her order is sent to the service unit cookie manager. Her sales awards are sent to the service unit cookie manager.

Q. Who advises the girl?

A. The parent/guardian or person designated by the service team can advise a Juliette. If the advisor plans to work on the Girl Scout program with the girl, the advisor must become an adult member of Girl Scouts.
