Outreach Overview
Daisy Headstart brings the Girl Scouting experience to 1,952 pre-schoolers ages 4 – 5. This weekly five-session program, which is provided on-site at Headstart centers, introduces the Girl Scouting experience to girls in low-income, at-risk communities. This program promotes the social skills and literacy skills needed to be successful in kindergarten. Girls participating in this program enjoy songs, stories, and creative activities as well as learn the Girl Scout promise and law. Girls Growing Strong will provide educational support to girls that are at high risk of being retained one grade level. Girls Growing Strong targets 3rd grade girls at risk for failing the math and reading TAKS tests. The program, delivered weekly by volunteers, combines proven math and reading teaching techniques with fun Girl Scout activities to help girls learn. Girls are rewarded for their participation in the program with monthly field trips to educational sites throughout Dallas. Girl Scouting in the School Day is a six session course designed to promote a healthy self-image and much-needed social skills for 7,225 girls in the at-risk Dallas County middle schools and East Texas schools it serves. This program addresses current social issues and trends affecting girls during what many would characterize as the most confusing time of their childhood. Through a variety of methods including role playing, personal assessments, and games, GSSD helps girls to avoid high-risk behaviors and develop self-esteem. This program provides participants the environment and ability to freely communicate their challenges and receive guidance to assist them with making positive decisions. Hermanitas brings the Girl Scouting opportunity to Hispanic girls throughout Dallas County. The program will serve to support 200 girls through education and enrichment with a focus on building English-language skills, career development and teaching life skills. This program will help lower the language barrier for Hispanic girls in schools through activities that encourage the use of the English language. As girls participating in this program will be encouraged to participate in family field trips that emphasize the things which they are learning. Tejas Action Group brings the benefits Girl Scouting to 2,000 girls in over 50 Dallas County schools who would not otherwise have the experience due to the lack of volunteers in low-income, high-risk areas the program serves. This program uses traditional Girl Scout curriculum which is adapted to address the unique needs and challenges of each community served. Girls participating in this after school program, which is takes place every other week during the school girl, value this program and its ability to broaden their perspectives and expand their options. Participants develop social competency skills, earn badges, and participate in a variety of activities including camping.
